Turbo Tuning!

The only thing I know is that a friend of mine has changed the charge-air pressure from the original
0.25 bar to 0.75 bar. He bought a vacuum unit at POINTINGER Vienna, which modifies the pressure. His experience is very
good, because the car is more alive now! I’m also looking forward to get a chip tuning for him but I still search
for a cheap way to get it. Maybe you are a eprom-programmer and you know how to make it then MAIL ME!
On the web I found a guy who changed his 460 turbo to hell-machine, because he got out prox. 200hps
(without changing the ECU!!!!) of the 1721ccm engine and this is pretty good I think…. Audis TT even
can’t make it better…..

B18U tuning!

This is the engine I have. First I thought for this engine it is impossible to get more power out of it, but now I’m
a little wiser and so I will tell you how to transform your 90hp Volvo into a rocket.
First thing I modified was a K&N (or you could buy JAMEX or (KINGDRAGON) free flow airfilterelement but its power was
not much better. So I thought I will buy me an air filter-bullet like the guys use in the R19s R19 Seite
and I got it at Reichhart-Motorsport in Germany. It’s the filter
for the R19 1.8i 88hp and with the delivery-costs to Austria I paid 169DM or 86.41 Euro. But this was the first tuning
which let me feel that my car has more power now…..and the sound is simply great!!!! ;-)
Then I helped the air filter to breeze free and I bought an aluminium pipe which delivers free air beside the heat sink
from the front of the car to the airfilterelement. This tuning is perfect for the B18U engines, the only thing you have
to remove is the upper engine-hook. I needs 20 seconds to remove it.

Then I modified my exhaust a little bit. My old one was rusty and so I removed it and put on the one from the ´92 turbo
because it has bigger pipe-diameters and no middle silencer!!!! Sounds great now, even in combination with the air filter
like a bear who got a cold…. I also wanna remove the catalyser, I know its strictly forbidden but 10hps more can be the
result of this tuning . I also try to get a fan-type exhaust which will give me better performance. If you don’t get an
original one I will drive down to Slovenia to Izpuzni Sistemi because there is a special manufacturer who can build me a free
flow-exhaust.

The next thing I want to change is the ECU-EPROM. I tried to remove it but I know now that I’ll need more professional
tools than I have….. Maybe I will go to a professional to get it out and then I will SOCKELN the eprom, because then I
can change the original with the modified one whenever I want to. The tuned eprom I get from a friend brings 102hp´s
and 155Nm´s torque instead of the original 90hp and 140Nm´s

But after all I will buy me the B20 engine with 110hps. Normally I would take the turbo-engine but the problem is the
wiring….for the turbo-engine I would have to change the complete wiring, for the B20 nothing but the ECU, because the
B20 is an over bored B18U which has more stroke and a different cylinder head with multiportinjection. I also search
for a performance camshaft for my B18U because this will also fit in the B20 but I wrote to a few companies like
Pipercams and Schrick but they don’t have a better one. So I will open my cylinder head and look which type of camshaft
is in there because maybe I can find a similar type in a R19 engine, for which they have all types of performance
camshafts.

B20F Motor

All in all I hope to get out of the 2litre unit a 135hps and I think this will be enough for the next year till I can
buy me a 850 T5-R or a S40 T4, also the C70 cabriolet would be fine or the S60…..what should I say, Volvo built so many
beautiful and fast cars in the last years that its really difficult which one I should buy. We will see wha kind of a car I
will get for 15000 Dm????

Turbodieseltuning

Ing. Roel van den Brink (Rica Engineering) wrote me this:

For the 440 and 460 inclusive the S40 and V40 we have too change everything mechanical.
This because there isn't a chip in there. When you want's more power and torque out of your td, you have to change the
catalysator for a Normal pipe, put an bleed valve in the waste gate line ( drill 4.0 mm in the bleed valve , so that the
turbo pressure comes to 1.2-1.3 bar.) and set the fuel pump ( inside ) 60 degrees richer.
This is the perfect tuning of the old Volvo’s.
For the V and S 40 td we change the turbo pressure, the max fuel of the fuel pump and replace the catalysator for a normal pipe.

With best regards, Roel van den brink

Colour the lights!

I opened my front lights and coloured the edge of the reflector in black. You can see now that it looks a bit like a S80
front light and the light intense is not influenced. The rear lights (winkers) I coloured with a spray which is
red-transparent and you can get in every backyard shop. Looks a bit like American cars where it was allowed to have red
winkers till 1980 I think. Its easy to make and it looks much better than before. Maybe I’ll soon buy me the rear
headlamp system of the 96 model which is much prettier than mine. I will also try to fix the after 92´ 440 front on
my Volvo, maybe it’ll fit…I hope.

Modifying the tires and putting on aluminium wheels is a very nice tuning because it lets your car look much better
and even the road holding is much better than before. I found nice BBS wheels on the net. But if you are searching
for many different types of aluminium wheels than you have to order the catalogue of MR-Motorsport because they have it
from 14” to 17” for the 440´s in different styles. I don’t have so much money to buy me new ones, so I will try to get
used VW Passat aluminium tires with 195/50/15 dimension ET35, because they fit perfectly on the 440s, the only thing
which is different is the middle centre -ring because the 440s have 52mm and VW 58, but I will try to get this little
plastic thing which helps me to mount it on my car.

Tires!

You should put on 195/55 HR 15 tires on your Volvo, because then it looks more sportive than before.
A very good catalogue for tires you can get (up to 17") MR Motorsport
